BANJALUKA, NOVEMBER 21 /SRNA/ - NDP president Dragan Čavić said that Republika Srpska, as an administrative, territorial and political unit is the only novelty on the European continent and in the disintegrated Yugoslavia after WWII which speaks of the gravity of the Dayton Peace Agreement for the Serbian people in BiH, particularly for Serbs who live in Srpska.

“People who at that time got that which we have today by political and military means built foundations on which we should build with a view of creating prosperity, better life for all people, and primarily with a view of maintaining peace with people with whom we had a difficult, bloody conflict 24 years ago,” Čavić told SRNA commenting on the 24th anniversary of the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement.

According to him, the Dayton Agreement is the most successful peace agreement in Europe since the end of WWII.

“I can speak of its gravity from the point of view of us, Serbs, as a constituent people and Republika Srpska as a constituent part of BiH to which it gave inter-state sovereignty by agreeing to become an entity within BiH. It was this peace solution that kept us here and we should build the future for our people and Republika Srpska on these foundations,” Čavić said.

He has added that since the signing of the Dayton Agreement, there have been more or less international pressures and assaults on Republika Srpska’s competences, but its basic values have been preserved.

“Nothing has changed when it comes to the attitude towards Republika Srpska within BiH. For all Serbs, both political representatives and the people, Srpska, as a Dayton creation, is internationally recognized within BiH. Unfortunately, Bosniak and Croatian political representatives and a large portion of these peoples see Srpska as an international injustice and are doing everything in their power to harm it, to reduce it, and they would prefer that it does not exist at all,” Čavić said.

He has added that these politics and attempts are a blow to peace solutions.

According to him, conclusions from the special session of the Republika Srpska National Assembly in a way represent a red line as it was shown that international interventionism has been present in BiH for 24 years, since the establishment of peace, and it was the most intensive in the first decade after the war.

“This did not stop, and it was the secret political desire of primarily Bosniak, but also of Croatian, political representatives, to instrumentalize international factors in the country. In perspective, the attitude towards the Dayton Agreement will be crucial in political decision making. The struggle has not stopped and will not stop,” Čavić said.

He has stressed that Serbs must build a future on Dayton foundations and must maintain that which they have, without compromise with anyone from the world, regardless of their influence.

Čavić has said that Republika Srpska should persist in the request that when the issue of accession to the EU is raised, BiH should join the EU with Srpska as a constituent part and with all of its competences typical for decentralized countries, particularly those which ended the war with a peaceful solution.

Today is the 24th anniversary of the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement at the US military base Wright-Patterson, which ended the war in BiH and established BiH’s constitutional and legal order.
